The Kentucky Derby is a long running horse racing event and one of the most well known in the world. Over the years a lot of glasses have been made to celebrate this event and have resulted in many collectible items that are highly sought after.
Made with love and passion, these commemorative collectible glasses have been made as far back as 1938.
Each glass from each year depicted something unique and original about that particular year.
During the first world war when shortages were noticed, a replacement product called Bakelite had to be used, which is a form of plastic from 1941 through to 1945.
Some of the rarest glasses are from 1950 and 1951 so if you ever manage to get your hands on a good conditioned one from either of those years you will be in for a very good time.
On another brief note, back in 1974, over 450,000 glasses were printed by a few differing companies. Each and every one of them had a horses name incorrectly spelled. Canonero II was listed as simply Canonero.
There were 3 main manufactured versions. One by a company called Libby, one by Federal and another one that was unnamed. Each manufacturer mistakenly depicted the horses name, and ultimately had to reprint thousands more correctly.
The named horse Canonero II was in fact the 1971 race winner and yet the ironic thing is it went unnoticed for a while. Unbelievable.
In the end the Libby company had to go and borrow thousands of glasses from the Federal company just to survive and hit it's targets.
Yet besides this, time has proven that all variations have become just as equally collectible as one another.
But when you put it down to value, the Federal designed glasses tend to retain a higher value than the others.
Some glasses such as modern gold edition glasses are normally made as part of a limited edition run of around 1000 glasses.
These limited run glasses would come with certificates of authenticity and would increase in value due to this. Ultimately the glasses would exchange ownership for as much as $60 and more.
If you enjoy rare collectible glasses then you will not go wrong if you invest in a good condition Kentucky glass.
When a particular race becomes very memorable due to unplanned wins etc then the glasses from those years always command a better price than glasses from other years.
If you are fanatical about the Kentucky Derby then you will love it when new ideas and news snippets come out.
